Milky Way across Vietnam 2024
The stunning beauty of the Milky Way across Vietnam is captured by various photographers participating in the international photo contest 35AWARDS.
Scenes like the Tuy An lighthouse, the En waterfall cave, or the shimmering tea hills of Moc Chau under the night sky are showcased in the images. The photographers have managed to capture the Milky Way from around February to November in the Gregorian calendar, on nights with clear skies and minimal light pollution, avoiding cloudy or rainy days.
For these enchanting photographs, they had to venture far from light-polluted areas, traveling to the outskirts of Da Lat or even further to the Northern mountainous regions. The photography technique required a long exposure time of 15-30 seconds to achieve the desired result. Additionally, preparations such as setting up a tent, bringing flashlights, and mosquito repellent were necessary as the photo sessions often lasted all night.

The annual international photo contest 35AWARDS was first organized by a team of professional photographers worldwide in 2015. The 2021 edition of 35AWARDS features multiple categories, including Milky Way. This category attracted 1,622 authors submitting 3,623 photos, with results recently announced. Vietnam had one photo in the top 10 and 15 photos in the top 200. The top-ranked images will be accumulated for the final photo contest of the year.
Pictured is the Ganh Den night scene in Tuy An, Phu Yen, captured by Bui Xuan Viet from Dong Nai. This photo is Vietnam’s sole entry in the top 10 of the Milky Way category at 35AWARDS. The author revealed that they brought a blanket from the hotel to the Ganh Den lighthouse area, selected a dry rocky beach, and captured the stars while stargazing.
Viet has had a passion for stargazing since childhood, with a faint band of light stretching across the sky, free from light pollution. Later on, they learned that this faint band of light was the Milky Way. It took Viet more than a year of self-study to capture their initial images, including standing outside in -10 degrees Celsius on the Everest Base Camp route in 2019 for over an hour to capture one perfect shot.

Viet 从小就对观星有着浓厚的兴趣，他看到天空中出现一道淡淡的光带，没有光污染。后来，他们才知道这条淡淡的光带就是银河。Viet 花了一年多的时间自学，才拍下了最初的照片，包括在 2019 年珠峰大本营路线上零下 10 摄氏度的户外站了一个多小时，才拍下了一张完美的照片。
The concept of the photograph “Touching the star Vega” by Bui Xuan Viet was stumbled upon serendipitously. During a photo expedition in Da Lat in March 2020, he noticed that both subjects and the star Vega could be captured within arm’s reach in the area of Pink Grass Hill, near Truc Hill. However, as the Milky Way and the star rose to a sufficient height, the sky was beginning to brighten, around 4:30 in the morning, making the shot less than ideal. He returned a month later to capture the moment at the perfect time when both subjects were within arm’s reach at 3 a.m. This photograph made it into the top 200 impressive Milky Way images on 35AWARDS.
In Vietnam, the Milky Way can be captured from approximately February to November in the Gregorian calendar, on moonless or moonset nights, avoiding cloudy or rainy days. It is recommended to travel far away from light pollution, if possible to the outskirts of Da Lat or further north in the mountainous regions. The shooting technique involves long exposure of around 15-30 seconds to achieve a beautiful photograph. Additionally, make sure to prepare everything from a tent, flashlight, to mosquito repellent, as the photo session may extend throughout the night.

The beach of Tan Thanh in Go Cong Dong, Tien Giang, which is approximately 65 km from Ho Chi Minh City, is a favored location for capturing the Milky Way, with relatively low light pollution and diverse foregrounds.
Mr. Phan Nhat Dang Thu from Ho Chi Minh City shared that taking a photo here holds many memories. Upon arrival at 4:30 in the morning, he had to quickly move to the shooting spot as the sunrise light would soon create heavy interference. He had to swiftly navigate through a muddy area as the tide was receding, sinking up to his knees and surrounded by mosquitoes. Despite limited time and challenging movement, he managed to capture three high-quality shots with a background of a boat and the beautiful moment of dawn approaching.
距离胡志明市约 65 公里的越南前江省高公洞县新城海滩是拍摄银河的最佳地点，光污染相对较低，前景多样。

Meanwhile, Mr. Chu Thien Son from Ho Chi Minh City mentioned that his first experience of capturing the Milky Way galaxy with friends was at Tân Thành beach, Tien Giang, with the picturesque backdrop of the oyster fishermen’s huts. Tân Thành boasts stretches of black sand spanning approximately 7 km. Visitors should not miss out on the delicious fresh seafood such as clams, crabs, and finger snails here.
“I was quite overwhelmed and excited about this genre of photography, with the guidance and help from my friends on how to capture it,” Mr. Son said.

The coastal area of Kê Gà, Hàm Thuận Nam, Bình Thuận portrays the pristine beauty of the turquoise sea, white sands, golden sun, and peculiar rock formations that protrude like the head of a rooster facing towards the ocean. This region is home to the Kê Gà lighthouse on Bà Island – the most beautiful islet in Bình Thuận. Kê Gà is not only renowned as the “most beautiful spot to watch the sunrise in Vietnam” but also an ideal location to capture images of the Milky Way.
Photographer Mr. Sơn emphasized that achieving clear photos is possible at Kê Gà on days when there are few boats and minimal light interference from the dragon fruit orchards surrounding the lighthouse.

The lone cajeput tree in Gò Duối village, Long Thành Nam commune, Hòa Thành, Tây Ninh is a favorite spot for travelers to check-in.
Professional photographer Nguyen Tấn Tuấn (from Ho Chi Minh City) shared that during a visit to his relatives in Tây Ninh, he set up a tent and watched the Milky Way with his son beside the lone cajeput tree, hoping to give his child the experience of nature under the starry sky.

Young photographer Truong Hoai Vu from Phu Yen province, currently a student at the University of Technology in Ho Chi Minh City, carefully selected a remote location at a hydroelectric reservoir, away from artificial light sources, far from the city of Tuy Hoa, to capture the Milky Way. Vu utilized panoramic photography techniques to capture the entire scene, incorporating a tree trunk with a curved shape mirroring the Milky Way, with colorful tents providing a striking contrast against the cold night sky. Another notable photograph by Vu is “Night at the Ganh Den Lighthouse, Phu Yen,” which also made it to the top 200 of the 35AWARDS competition.

Nguyen Trong Doi, a lecturer at Quy Nhon University, Binh Dinh province, is a passionate photographer. According to him, capturing the Milky Way from the En Cave Waterfall requires not only conquering the waterfall itself but also understanding the lunar cycle, monitoring the weather, selecting camera placement, and composing the shot. As night falls and the Milky Way is about to appear, one must venture into the “cave of the waterfall” to take the photo. The dark sky, difficult terrain, slippery conditions, and mist from the waterfall pose significant challenges, necessitating the presence of teammates for support.
“It is only when leaving the waterfall cave and reviewing the resulting masterpiece that the indescribable emotions surface, blending with the roar of the waterfall. A memorable journey with teammates in conquering the capture of the Milky Way from the En Cave Waterfall,” said Doi.
恩洞瀑布（或 K50 瀑布）位于嘉莱省 K’Bang 区 Kon Chu Rang 自然保护区，是越南最热门的体验式旅游目的地之一，也是壮观的摄影胜地。
平定省归仁大学讲师 Nguyen Trong Doi 是一位充满热情的摄影师。据他说，从恩洞瀑布拍摄银河不仅需要征服瀑布本身，还需要了解月亮周期、监测天气、选择相机位置和构图。夜幕降临，银河即将出现，必须冒险进入“瀑布洞穴”拍摄照片。黑暗的天空、艰难的地形、湿滑的条件和瀑布的雾气构成了重大挑战，需要队友在场提供支持。
土井说：“只有在离开瀑布洞穴，回顾最终的杰作时，难以言喻的情感才会浮现，与瀑布的轰鸣声融为一体。与队友一起征服岩洞瀑布银河系的旅程令人难忘。”
Meanwhile, the young photographer Tran Van Linh (Hanoi) is an individual passionate about exploring travel experiences, seeking to enjoy the peaceful feeling of being away from urban areas. Recently, he has chosen Long Coc tea hill in Phu Tho (photo) and the heart-shaped tea hill in Moc Chau, Son La for overnight camping and night sky photography pursuits.

According to Trần Văn Linh, both Long Cốc and Mộc Châu (pictured) are well-known tourist destinations, but most people only admire the sunrise and sunset, overlooking the beauty of the night.
“In the evening after capturing the sunset, I positioned myself to photograph the Milky Way. In the cold night mist, gazing at them stretching across the tea hills made me feel like I was lying in the space of the universe,” he said.

“I, along with my colleagues, traveled nearly 200 km from Hanoi to Dong Chau Beach, Thai Binh. This is one of the few remaining pristine beaches in the northern region. We stayed up all night by the cold beach, under a sky dark as ink, at times even slipping into the sandy underwater pits due to the difficult visibility, almost dropping our equipment into the muddy shore. However, the joy of capturing the night sky made those moments worthwhile,” Mr. Tran Anh Tuan remarked.

The photograph of the terraced fields of Sang Nhu sparkling under the night sky was captured by the young photographer Hoang Minh Hieu from Hanoi. Sang Nhu is located in Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai, known as one of the most beautiful terraced fields in the Northwest region of Vietnam.
